Joshua H. Kwan

关啟键

Founder / Advisory Board
Pronouns: They/Them
What I Do: Creative development, Community partnerships, Content & Communications
What I Am: Bay Area native & Chinese American from an immigrant family background

Joshua is currently the Content Advisement Coordinator at the Walt Disney Studios with the Representation, Inclusion Strategies, & Engagement (RISE) team. Their unit provides creative feedback on projects from Pixar, Marvel, Disney Animation, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Fox, Searchlight Pictures, Disney Theatrical Group, and Disney Live Action for the entire life cycle of a project: from development and pre-production, to marketing and distribution. The notes are focused on maximizing diverse storytelling opportunities: eradicating stereotypes and tropes & ensuring authentic representation.

They were most recently a Production Coordinator with Lucasfilm Animation, Ltd. shepherding the creative development & production efforts in partnership with the VP of Animation Production & the Supervising Director in a galaxy far, far away on The Bad Batch and Tales of the Jedi. Previously, they were a Production Assistant supporting two Curious George feature films at Universal Animation Studios assisting all departments from story to vizdev to post. They also participated in the Disney College Program and were a Cast Member with the Disneyland Resort before breaking into the world of animation. In their free time, they also serve on the board of WIA (Women in Animation) as a Communications Lead, helping empower and support folks of all underrepresented gender identity communities.

A graduate from Carleton College, they majored in psychology and minored in educational studies & women’s and gender studies. Joshua is passionate about the art form and power of animation as a vehicle for impactful and transformative storytelling. Their hope for the future is to partner with creatives in development to help produce & tell stories that inspire and resonate with global audiences.

Wishful fact about them: In college, they studied abroad in the Czech Republic for cross-cultural psychology and in India for gender & sexuality. They wish they could study abroad more!
